He had been suffering from ill health for some time.

Scanlon was one of the survivors of the Munich air disaster in 1958, in which eight of his United team-mates and three club officials lost their lives.

He recovered from a broken leg and fractured skull suffered in the crash to return to the playing field in the 1958/59 season, scoring 16 goals to help United finish runners-up in the league.

Scanlon left Old Trafford in 1960 ending a six-year association with the club. His departure was followed by spells at Newcastle, Mansfield and Lincoln.
