The 27-year-old has been strongly linked with a departure during the close-season, having handed in a transfer request in May prior to then-manager Alex Ferguson's retirement.

Suggestions of an uneasy relationship with new boss David Moyes have since fuelled rumours Rooney could be sold, while Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has publicly declared his desire to sign the England frontman.

However, Scholes, who made ovr 700 appearances in almost two decades at United before retiring at the end of the 2012-13 campaign, feels that the striker would gain nothing from a departure.

"I don't think there's anywhere better than Manchester United to play your football," he told Sky Sports News

"It's up to Wayne - but he's a top, top player and every player and fan wants him to stay."

United's reluctance to part with Rooney is likely to have increased following their failure to capture both Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona during the close-season.

But Scholes does not believe Moyes is yet under pressure following those disappointments, and insists the Scot has the tools for success at his disposal.

"He's got a quality squad there, with already 18-20 quality players," he added. "I'm sure David Moyes is trying to get players - and hopefully he'll get the ones he wants."
