The German has guided Madrid to wins in each of their opening three Primera Liga matches while they also opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 Group C defeat of Werder Bremen on Tuesday night.

But after the Bremen encounter, Schuster cast doubt over his long-term future in the Spanish capital.

He told Germany's Premiere television: "I have got to wait and see if this is what I really want.

"I have got to see if I will enjoy the way things work at Real Madrid in the long-term."

Schuster is famed for developing small clubs into solid competitors, but his move from the provinces into the most distinguished role in Spanish football has come as a shock to many people, including himself.

"You see all the people who come to training, and that really is a big responsibility for somebody who has previously only worked at small clubs," added Schuster.

"There are a few things I am not yet clear with and I will have to just see how this year goes."
