Rooney grabbed a second-half double at Old Trafford, before Dimitar Berbatov put the icing on the cake in the 89th minute.
Schwarzer had made a fine one-hand save from a Rooney first-half effort, but the floodgates opened after the scores were deadlocked at the break.

In Switzerland's Super League, Scott Chipperfield started FC Basel's 1-0 win at FC Luzern. The veteran Aussie who recently returned from injury was replaced on 78 minutes.
In Russia's Premier League, Luke Wilkshire played a full game for Dinamo Moscow as they won 1-0 at Spartak Moscow on the opening weekend of the new campaign.
In Belgium's Pro League, Nikita Rukavytsya started and played 64 minutes as KSV Roeselare lost 1-0 to Club Brugge.
In Norway's Eliteserien, defender Jade North made his debut and put in a full shift in Norway as Tromso beat Honefoss 2-0.
In Greece's B Ethniki, Nathan Burns put in a man of the match performance before coming off injured in Kerkyra's 3-2 win over Diagoras Rodos.
Burns set up the opening goal before scoring his team's third early in the second half. He came off injured two minutes later and the visiting team pulled two goals back but could not restore parity.
In Japan's J.League, Matthew Spiranovic was an unused sub as Urawa Reds defeated FC Tokyo 1-0, while in the second division Mark Milligan put in a full shift for JEF United as they beat 2-0.
In Korea's K-League, defender Sasa Ognenovski put in a full shift as Seongnam demolished Incheon United 6-0.
