AUSSIES ABROAD: Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has hailed Fulham boss Roy Hodgson and his team's spirit after the English Premier League side beat Hamburg SV 2-1 to reach the final of the Europa League.
Schwarzer, who played in the 2006 UEFA Cup final with Middlesbrough, can now look forward to a European final date against Atletico Madrid on May 12.
The Aussie stopper was beaten on 22 minutes by a stunning Mladen Petric free-kick but Fulham responded with two second-half goals from Simon Davies and Zoltan Gera to clinch the tie.
Speaking to ITV Sport after the memorable victory at Craven Cottage, Schwarzer hailed the manager and the team's spirit.
"Roy has been fantastic since day one, he has brought the team and the whole club together, we will fight for one another until the death." he said.
"We have an unbelievable team spirit at this football club, the first goal rocked us but we knew that if we got one goal then we could get another. The lads played unbelievably well, it was fantastic."
In Sweden's Allsvenskan, Aussie goalkeeper Ante Covic was an unused substitute as IF Elfsborg defeated Brommapojkarna 1-0.
Despite being available after suspension, Covic was left on the pine with Joakim Wulff preferred having impressed in the Aussie's absence. It appears Covic, a World Cup hopeful, may have lost his spot as number one at Elfsborg.
In Japan's J2.League, Mark Milligan played a full game as JEF United Chiba drew 2-2 at Tochigi. Promotion-chasing United are currently second in Japan's second division.
In USA's Open Cup, ex-Melbourne Victory frontman Danny Allsopp wasn't in the DC United squad which defeated FC Dallas 4-2.
Finally in England's Conference playoffs, James Meredith put in a full shift as York City won their first-leg against Luton Town 1-0. The return leg will be played at Luton on Monday.
