Scolari already knows the bulk of his squad for the tournament in Switzerland and Austria this summer, but stressed that a high level of fitness is a prerequisite.

"Basically, I know 85-90% of my players [for the squad]," he told Portuguese broadcaster Sport TV on Thursday.

"The unfit ones will not be taken into account. There are some players who will need to improve their fitness.

"Any player who does not look after himself is throwing away his chance."

Scolari did not identify any players in particular, but his comments may have been targeted at Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso, who has recently appeared on the front of several lifestyle and fashion magazines.

"Players who are two or three kilos overweight, with a large bottom, and those who are preoccupied with other things such as nights out and fashion shows could lose their place," he added.

"This is a warning I am sending out.

"I've been watching games, reading the players' interviews and I am analysing them. This is a warning."

Portugal are set to play a friendly against Italy in Zurich on February 6 with Scolari announcing the squad on January 29.
