The striker ace presented the cash from Celtic's charity fund to the Red Cross help rebuild lives shattered by the February fires that killed more than 200.

Victorian Premier John Brumby thanked McDonald and his club for the donation.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Celtic Football Club for their generous donation of £10,000 to the Victoria Bush Fire Appeal fund," he said. "It's an extraordinarily generous donation.

"I'd particularly like to thank Celtic's CEO, Peter Lawwell and our state's own Scott McDonald for their role in the making of this donation."

  • Last month's World Cup qualifier against Japan raised almost $40,000 for the appeal fund too. Japanese fans at the match contributed 340,000 yen, while the Japanese Football Association donated 2,000,000 yen, worth in total more than $39,000.
