The Light Blues had a goal wiped out in the first half for a foul by defender Kirk Broadfoot on Hoops' keeper Artur Boruc and after the break Rangers striker Kris Boyd missed the best chance of the game by blasting a shot straight at the Pole.

But in the 57th minute McDonald turned Broadfoot and volleyed high past Allan McGregor to inflict upon Rangers their first home defeat of 2008 while also taking a significant step closer to their fourth title in succession.

Speaking after the game the Australian said: "Losing at home (to Rangers last time) hurt us quite a lot, so we wanted to come here and take a bit of revenge.

"I don't think we were favourites for this game either. A lot of people thought that Rangers would take the game to us because they needed the points more than us but we were desperate to come here and give our fans something.

"Our first win (at Ibrox) in three years - it's a fantastic feeling."

Lee Miller's first-half strike gave Aberdeen their fifth consecutive SPL home win as they claimed a 1-0 triumph over 10-man Hearts in front of a packed Pittodrie.

The Dons striker bagged his seventh goal of the season when he volleyed home Scott Severin's free-kick.

Marius Zaliukas saw red in a fiery second half for elbowing Andrew Considine when a melee broke out in the Aberdeen penalty box in the run up to a Hearts corner.

A 22nd-minute strike from Scott Robertson was enough to give Dundee United a 1-0 victory against Falkirk.

The visitors finished the game with 10 men as skipper Darren Barr was red-carded following two second-half bookings.

And United's victory should have been more comfortable as they passed up a string of chances to net a second.

However, the Bairns still came within a whisker of snatching an unlikely draw when Scott Arfield struck the post 16 minutes from time.

Daniele Invincibile marked his return from injury with a brace for 10-man Kilmarnock in a thrilling 4-2 win at Hibernian.

The Australian opened the scoring in the fifth minute and Allan Russell doubled the visitors' lead.

Hibs midfielder Dean Shiels scored two penalties in a five-minute spell, with Kilmarnock goalkeeper Alan Combe sent-off for conceding the second, but Invincibile headed the away side back in front before Garry Hay notched a fourth.

Craig Dargo's goal 12 minutes from time gave St Mirren a fourth successive win in the SPL as they beat Hamilton 1-0 at Love Street.

The Paisley side had looked as though they would have to settle for just a point from their home match against the league's basement side, despite having the majority of scoring chances.

However, substitute Dargo, who had been on the pitch for just 10 minutes, scored the game's only goal by applying the finishing touch to a well-worked move by Andy Dorman and Jack Ross.

Chris Porter headed a hat-trick as Motherwell marked the approaching anniversary of Phil O'Donnell's death with a much-needed 3-2 victory over Inverness.

Porter completed his treble in the 78th minute, the moment when the late skipper collapsed against Dundee United last year.

The striker scored twice in a first half dominated by Motherwell, whose victory rarely looked in doubt despite the loss of goals to Ross Tokely and Adam Rooney in the closing stages of each half.
