The Asian nation has enjoyed little success on the international stage over the years, having managed just one appearance at a World Cup in 2002 whilst twice finishing second at the Asian Cup.

The Chinese Super League, meanwhile, has struggled to really capture the imagination of local fans, although some clubs stepped up their bid to increase the quality of the competition this year by signing a number of international players from western leagues.

China will host the Barclays Asia Trophy in Beijing next week during which the Premier League will offer their knowledge and expertise in a bid to further improve the development of the country's domestic league.

"The Premier League recognises that the development of the game in China is critical to football's future as the world's sport of choice," said Scudamore in the official programme for the Barclays Asia Trophy.

"We are in Beijing to pass on some of our knowledge and expertise, not only in running a successful competition that has grown to be internationally renowned, but in other areas of the game too.

"It is these building blocks, together with the drive and ambition of the Beijing Football Association, which, in the future, could see China rival England as one of the world's footballing powers and the Chinese Super League competing with the Premier League. We would relish that challenge."

Tottenham, West Ham and Hull are all heading to China for this year's Barclays Asia Trophy with local side Beijing Guoan also taking part in the tournament.

This year's edition of the bi-annual tournament represents the first time a side that finished in the top four of the Premier League has not taken part.

However, Scudamore is confident that factor will not lessen the quality of the competition in any way.

"We have three fantastic clubs in Hull City, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United - each of them says something about what makes the Premier League so compelling - combining the great heritage and tradition of the English game with the chance for fresh talent to challenge and be a part of a new history on the basis of merit," he added.

"During the course of the Barclays Asia Trophy we will see stars of true international quality and experience - Tottenham's Robbie Keane and Jermaine Jenas, West Ham's Robert Green and Matthew Upson, Hull City's Nicky Barmby and Geovanni and Guoan's Yang Hao and Ryan Griffiths - in what I am sure will prove to be some extremely competitive football."

The Barclays Asia Trophy will be played at the Workers Stadium in Beijing on Wednesday July 29 and Friday July 31.
