IAN Holloway feels more credit should be given to Charlie Adam's Blackpool team-mates and is looking forward to seeing how they cope without their captain against Tottenham on Sunday.
The Seasiders have won many plaudits so far in their maiden Barclays Premier League campaign, having defied expectation by collecting 22 points from their opening 16 fixtures.
They currently lie 10th in the table and go into the Spurs match off the back of a four-game unbeaten run.
Much attention has been focused on the skipper Adam, who proved so influential in Blackpool's promotion charge last term and has contributed four goals in all competitions to date in 2010-11.
The Scotland midfielder is banned for one match having picked up his fifth booking of the season last weekend against Stoke, but Holloway is keen to play down the potential impact of Adam's absence.
"All you lot are making him out to be some sort of genius," the manager said at today's press conference.
"I think he's a good lad and a good player, but if you ask him, he is only as good as the players he gets the ball from and gives it back to.
"I thought we played brilliantly against Aston Villa (in November) even though we lost 3-2, and he only played the last few minutes in that game.
"If I lose David Vaughan, I might have a problem then - you never run midfield on your own.
"I used to help Ray Wilkins sometimes (at QPR) by tackling people while he passed it, and when it was said that Wilkins ran the midfield I didn't like that.
"So I don't like the fact that Charlie Adam gets all our credit. I'll be looking forward to whoever I pick going out there and trying to play their own game.
"None of them are Charlie, he is a unique individual, but so are all of my players, so let's see what we can do without him."
Vaughan and Craig Cathcart will undergo late fitness tests ahead of Sunday's contest having both picked up knocks in training, the cold weather again having an impact after snow forced Holloway to hold sessions on the beach last week in the build-up to the Stoke match.
"I think it was the surface," Holloway said, referring to the injuries.
"It was a bit icy and almost frosty, and I tried to find the best area I could, but Vaughany rolled his ankle when someone half-tackled him, so we'll have to see on that one. Craig went off with a sore knee and that is the jarring on the hard surface.
"I tried to use the end of the pitch that was thawed out the most, but they'll have to get on with it. The surface might be slightly hard on Sunday if we manage to get it on."
Blackpool's last scheduled home game against Manchester United also fell victim to the elements and had to be postponed, something Holloway hopes will not happen again this weekend.
Asked if he was optimistic the game would go ahead, Holloway said: "That's not my job, I don't know.
"If we get the weather that we are all supposed to be getting then you won't see a football match out there, but we are doing what we can and hopefully we can get it on."
Meanwhile, striker Luke Varney has confirmed that he wants to remain a Blackpool player through to the end of the season at the very least.
Reports have suggested Varney, who has netted five times for Holloway's side since joining on a season-long loan from Derby in August, could sign a permanent deal at Bloomfield Road in January or even be snapped up by another club.
However, the 28-year-old said today that he expects to see out his current deal and would like to open talks about extending his stay with the Tangerines after that.
"I've said from the start that if there is in anything in place, I'd be delighted to stay here," Varney said.
"They have been fantastic to me and gave me a great chance. There's no way I'm going anywhere - I'm here until at least the end of the season and then I'd love to sit down and sort things out.
"It's a place where I am really enjoying my football and I'm sure I will continue to do so. I wouldn't be interested in going anywhere in January, I've made that clear."
