The death toll rose to 179 today while around 1500 are thought to have sustained injuries following the disaster that struck the central Italian region yesterday.

"This is a tragedy that affects the whole country," said Italian Football Federation president Giancarlo Abete.

"Football is a popular sport that has to bow as a sign of respect.

"We are united in pain for the families of the victims.

"Italian football will continue to show its solidarity with the population hit by the tragedy."
