Juventus moved back to the top of Serie A with seven games to go as their win at Palermo tonight took them above AC Milan, who suffered a shock defeat at home to Fiorentina.
The Turin giants, who remain unbeaten in their 31 games so far, secured a 2-0 victory in Sicily thanks to goals from Leonardo Bonucci and Fabio Quagliarella and are on course for their first title since returning to the Italian top flight in 2007.
Bonucci's flicked header from an Andrea Pirlo corner broke the deadlock after 55 minutes and Quagliarella added the second after the ball was steered to him by Alessandro Matri.
The Bianconeri were indebted to bitter rivals Fiorentina for regaining the number one spot, as Brazil-born forward Amauri scored the decisive 89th-minute goal in a 2-1 win against Milan at San Siro.
The home side took the lead after half an hour as Zlatan Ibrahimovic tucked home his 24th league goal of the campaign from the penalty spot, a kick awarded for a foul by Matija Nastasic on Maxi Lopez.
However, the Viola drew level two minutes before the break when Stevan Jovetic applied the finish to Lorenzo de Silvestri's pass, and the Montenegrin then laid on the late chance which Amauri took to end the Rossoneri's nine-match unbeaten run.
The win also boosted the Florence side's survival hopes, although Lecce's 4-2 win over Roma means they are still only five points clear of the bottom three.
Lazio held onto the third and final Champions League qualifying spot with a 3-1 win over Napoli at the Stadio Olimpico.
Victory for Walter Mazzarri's team would have lifted them above Lazio into third on goal difference, but they fell behind to a ninth-minute goal from Antonio Candreva.
Goran Pandev (34) equalised against his former club, but Lazio regained the lead in spectacular style midway through the second period when Stefan Radu's cross from the left was met by a flying scissors kick from Stefano Mauri, and his sweet connection gave Morgan de Sanctis no chance.
Cristian Ledesma's 81st-minute penalty wrapped up the win, while Udinese climbed above Napoli into fourth with a 3-1 win over Parma at the Stadio Friuli.
They triumphed thanks to Kwadwo Asamoah's brace, which sandwiched Antonio di Natale's 21st Serie A goal of the season, with Alessandro Lucarelli netting Parma's only goal with six minutes to go. It was Udinese's first win in six league matches.
Roma's Champions League hopes were dented as they suffered a 4-2 defeat at Lecce, who cut the gap to safety to four points.
The Puglia team opened up a 2-0 advantage with goals from Luis Muriel and David di Michele, and the same duo were on target in the second period.
The Giallorossi pulled goals back through Bojan Krkic and Erik Lamela, but Lecce held on to end a five-match winless run and move within four points of Parma and Genoa.
Inter Milan were unable to capitalise on Roma's slip-up as they were held 2-2 against Cagliari, the nominal home side in a match being played in Trieste because of a dispute with the local council over the Sardinians' Sant' Elia stadium.
Cagliari led twice through Davide Astori (five) and Mauricio Pinilla (61), but each time Inter hit back quickly through Argentinian duo Diego Milito and Esteban Cambiasso to keep up their hopes of salvaging Europa League qualification from a disappointing campaign.
Chievo boosted their survival hopes as a 3-2 home win over Catania took them 11 points clear of the bottom three.
American midfielder Michael Bradley gave them an early lead and Sergio Pellissier added a second from the penalty spot, having been brought down by Nicola Spolli, who was shown a red card.
Marco Andreolli's own goal gave the Sicilians hope of extending their unbeaten run to nine games, but the Flying Donkeys restored their two-goal cushion as Pellissier teed up Alberto Paloschi for a close-range finish. Sergio Almiron tapped home a late second for Catania, who are just a point better off than Chievo.
Alberto Malesani's first match in charge of Genoa ended with a 1-1 draw at Novara. Rodrigo Palacio put the Rossoblu ahead in the seventh minute but second-bottom Novara proceeded to dominate the match and levelled through Giuseppe Mascara midway through the second half.
The result extended Genoa's winless run to 10 matches, while Novara remain five points better off than bottom side Cesena, who drew 0-0 at home to Bologna.
Siena climbed above fellow mid-table opponents Atalanta as Mattia Destro's injury-time goal condemned the Bergamaschi to only their third home defeat of the season.
Ezequiel Schelotto gave Atalanta the lead in the sixth minute but the Tuscans recovered as Marcelo Larrondo's penalty drew them level, and Destro settled it in Siena's favour late on.
