The 40-year-old has been linked with a move to the A-League, but Sydney chief executive George Perry insisted the AFC Champions League side will not be pursuing the former Manchester United and Tottenham frontman.

Perry is seeking a replacement for Sunderland striker Dwight Yorke, who left the club at the end of the 2005-06 season after helping Sydney win the inaugural A-League Championship.

A-League sides are allowed to sign one "marquee" player meaning that his personal terms can fall outside the salary cap which is imposed on side's in Australia's top-flight.

Sheringham, who has scored twice in 17 league appearances for struggling West Ham this season, is the oldest player to score in the English Premier League and will turn 41 next month.

"We were also concerned about his ability to play on a regular basis in the Australian climate," Perry revealed.

"We've got another six players we're looking at from the Premier League and from Europe but we want the right person."

"It would be great to capture another Dwight Yorke. He certainly was very special. We want someone who can contribute on the field and off the field like Dwight did.

"I think it is going to become a lot clearer when the European season finishes."
