Manchester United recaptured the Premier League title last season following two years of Chelsea dominance, and both sides are sure to be treating this year's Community Shield at Wembley as a chance to strike an early blow in the psychological battle for the season to come.
Chelsea gained a measure of revenge with victory in the FA Cup final, meaning pride and silverware will be on offer for the winners of this match.
Here we consider where the game will be won and lost.
WAYNE ROONEY v JOHN TERRY
Two bloody-minded, highly-talented England internationals who will be keen to assert themselves on the traditional curtain-raiser.
While Rooney is capable of the deftest of touches and gentlest of flicks he is also not averse to putting himself about up front. England skipper Terry has been struggling for fitness in pre-season but is expected to be fit for the clash and is not one to shirk a physical challenge. Will look to produce a typically dominant display at the back.
CRISTIANO RONALDO v TAL BEN HAIM
England left-back Ashley Cole has stepped up his comeback and came through 65 minutes against Brondby unscathed but it is still early days and with Wayne Bridge also out, Ben Haim is ready to step in.
It is not his preferred position but the summer recruit is versatile and Mourinho could be happy to have a look at him against first-rate opposition, while Cole readies himself for the season proper.
Shackling Ronaldo would be a tough challenge for the former Bolton centre-back and Ronaldo, rated by many as the world's finest player at present, is unlikely to go easy on him.
With pace and skill to burn, he would be expected to exploit his Israeli opponent who will be eager to stake his claim for a major role this season.
RIO FERDINAND v DIDIER DROGBA
The Ivory Coast striker finally showed his true colours in a Chelsea shirt last season with a glut of goals and a string of powerful performances.
He may still feel his record against the top sides leaves something to be desired and it will be Ferdinand's job, alongside partner Nemanja Vidic, to stop him improving it.
The England defender has the pace and the positional sense to do that but may need to curb his attacking instincts to get the job done.
