WELLINGTON Phoenix defender Ben Sigmund has been suspended for three weeks following an alleged sneaky punch on Melbourne Victory's Adrian Leijer on Friday night.
The initial incident occurred in the 36th minute of the game that finished 1-1 and originally escaped the attention of the referee, therefore allowing the Match Review Panel to intervene.
The MRP has alleged that Sigmund committed the offence of "Assault on a Player (e.g. violent conduct when not challenging for the ball)" against Leijer and proposed a sanction of three matches on Monday night.
Sigmund has until 12.00 noon on Tuesday to accept the proposed sanction or refer the matter to a hearing by the FFA Disciplinary Committee.
The match featured a stirring comeback by 10-man Victory after a red card was handed out to midfielder Nick Ward for two bookable offences.
