It's easy to forget after 18-year-old Sarpreet Singh scored an absolute cracker on his full debut against Perth Glory, that the youngster almost scored an indentical goal a few weeks earlier.

To put it mildly, Singh has a very special left boot for his age, the kind that may only come along once in a generation for the struggling New Zealand club. So it's worth celebrating when it happens.

“I remember some good build-up play, it started all the way from the back…exactly what we trained,” Singh explained.

“And then it got to a point where I had to be in between the lines and that’s where I was, and I turned and I saw that side of the goal free and hit it sweetly.

“My first thought was to shoot.

“[I’ve watched it] quite a few times,” he added.

“It’s always pleasing to get your first goal in the A-League, so it’s a start for me. I need to kick on and carry on, you can’t just stop there.”

Phoenix certainly can't let it stop there. After earning a brief respite with the result against Perth, the most important game of Wellington's season occurs this weekend, against fellow cellar-dwellars Central Coast Mariners.

The Mariners also performed strongly last weekend against Adelaide United in their 2-2 draw, which leaves everything on the line for both clubs. Singh's hoping he can prove the difference.

“I basically want to keep doing what I’m doing, but with consistency, because sometimes young kids just come in and they play one good game, and then they’re out,” Singh admitted.

“Performing week in, week out is what the good professionals do.”
