Sir Alex Ferguson's final chewing gum as Manchester United manager against West Brom at the Hawthorns in 2013 has sold for £390,000 (AUD$720,000) in an auction on eBay.

Arguably the greatest manager of all time, Ferguson was quite notorious for his gum chewing exploits during his 26-year stint at Old Trafford.

The Scotsman was in charge for 1,500 games for United and was always found with a piece of gum in his mouth, especially when times became stressful for the Red Devils.

It is estimated that he went through at least 3,000 packets of chewing gum during his tenure, however, this particular piece is undoubtedly the most valuable.

Gifted to him by the West Brom mascot prior to a spectacular 5-5 draw between the two teams, Ferguson's final piece of gum was picked up by a fan.

The supporter then put the chewing gum on eBay with the listing stating:

"Used chewing gum: RARE: Recovered from The Hawthorns. Clear Perspex/wooden case. Unofficial merchandise, rumoured to belong to Sir Alex. After 1,500 games of intense chewing as manager of Man Utd, here lies Fergie's last piece of chewing gum. All proceeds go to the MU Foundation charity."

Clearly aiming to make the piece of gum look as prestigious as possible it was placed in a perspex case with a plaque on the front reading: "The Last Gum: Sir Alex Ferguson, 19.05.2013."

The auction was clearly popular with one rich fan going all out with a £390,000 bid, however, with all proceeds going to the MU Foundation it was perhaps just a generous donation with a nice piece of nostalgia in return.
