VPL WRAP: Northcote City moved back into the top five with a 6-0 win over Victorian Training Centre, while Dandenong Thunder continued their late charge for a finals spot.
Victorian Training Centre 1 (Stipo Andrijasevic)
Richmond 3 (Erhan Karahan, Devon Bonne, Michael Catalano)
@ Knights Stadium
RICHMOND have kept their slim hopes of playing finals alive with a 3-1 win over Victorian Training Centre.
The Eagles are now within two points of the top five after recording their fifth-straight victory.
It was not before Stipo Andrijasevic had given VTC an 18th-minute lead, but Richmond did head into the interval in front.
Left-back Erhan Karahan and striker Devon Bonne both netted before winger Michael Catalano sealed the win late in the second half.
VTC have now lost six games on the trot, while Richmond have games against Melbourne Knights and St Albans to finish the season – although they will still be relying on other results going their way to sneak into the finals.
Victorian Training Centre 0
Northcote City 6 (Trent Rixon (3), Glen Trifiro, Dean Piemonte, James Kalifatidis)
@ John Cain Memorial Park
NORTHCOTE City have moved into the top five with a 6-0 thrashing of Victorian Training Centre.
A Trent Rixon hat-trick helped City into the finals race as they capitalised on having played a game more than sixth and seventh-placed Heidelberg and Green Gully.
Glen Trifiro gave them a seventh-minute lead before Rixon netted in the first half.
The second half was a rout with Dean Piemonte making it 3-0, before Rixon completed his hat-trick with goals on 52 and 70 minutes.
Second-half substitute James Kalifatidis also got on the scoresheet late on with Northcote facing Bentleigh and South Melbourne in the final two rounds.
Dandenong Thunder 3 (Luke Sherbon (3))
Melbourne Knights 1 (Kayne Vincent)
@ George Andrews Reserve
A LUKE Sherbon hat-trick has given Dandenong Thunder an important 3-1 win over Melbourne Knights.
The natural midfielder played up front and ran amok in the first half, netting three times to end the Knights’ season.
Sherbon was superb in the first half and after two fine strikes, he won and converted a penalty to round out his hat-trick.
The Knights improved in the second half and forward Kayne Vincent also scored from the spot.
While Paul Magdic’s side can no longer mark the finals, the Thunder have two big games – against South Melbourne and Oakleigh – to finish the season and try and secure a top-five spot.
St Albans Saints 0
Oakleigh Cannons 2 (Hayden Doyle, Ricky Diaco)
@ Churchill Reserve
OAKLEIGH Cannons have moved back into second spot with a routine 2-0 win over the St Albans Saints.
First-half goals from Hayden Doyle and Ricky Diaco were enough for the Cannons to record victory after consecutive losses.
They had goalkeeper Peter Zois to thank early on when the former Melbourne Heart shot-stopper saved a penalty from Saints midfielder Louis Fenton.
Moments later, Doyle opened the scoring before Diaco struck from a free-kick to put them in the lead heading into the break.
It was enough to move into second above South Melbourne.
