SYDNEY FC defender Hayden Foxe believes the manner of his side's fighting draw with leaders Brisbane Roar last weekend proves the champions are close to returning to their best form.
The Sky Blues were outplayed for long periods against the Roar at the SFS last Saturday but dug in and came away with a well-earned 1-1 draw, to back up their first win of the season against Perth a week earlier.
It's a match the side definitely would have lost earlier in the season as they struggled through the first 10 games without a victory.
Foxe is confident the club's fortunes have turned for the good and expects Sydney to continue their recent recovery against fellow strugglers Newcastle at the Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday.
"There's no doubt luck went our way against Brisbane but we fought hard and got a point," the veteran defender said on Friday.
"We've got that belief that we're still a good side.
"We know things will now turn around for us if we keep working as hard as we are then the results will keep going our way.
"We've got to build on that again and produce the same spirit we showed to tackle Newcastle this weekend.
"It's going to be a fight and a scrap but if we can fight and scrap better than (the Jets) I think we'll get the result."
Sydney have lost key midfielder Nicky Carle for the next month and coach Vitezslav Lavicka has called on the club's young brigade to step up and fill the breach.
Lavicka believes players like Brendan Gan, Kofi Danning and teenager Terry Antonis have an opportunity to secure a spot in the side during the marquee man's absence.
"It's unlucky Nicky's injured again, it's not good news for him, not good news for coaching staff or for all of the Sydney FC fans," Lavicka said.
"We need to give him time for recovery. We know that he's one of the key players in the squad.
"(But) we have several young players in the squad, who are good players also.
"The time for them is coming I think."
Asked if he believed Sydney had turned the corner after a difficult opening two months of the season, the Sky Blues boss said: "We got the four points from the last two games, so it's a big step forward.
"But now we need to do more.
"The game against Newcastle this weekend is very important for us."
