Brad Smith says the Socceroos are aiming to dominate Iraq on Thursday like they did in their last meeting in Perth in September.
At nib Stadium last year Australia beat the Iraqis 2-0, but could have scored several more goals in a strong display. The two countries meet in their return fixture in Tehran on Thursday (11pm AEDT).
Smith said the Socceroos are gunning for similar result and performance.
"We just need to look back to that and see how we dominated them last time," he said.
"We just need to hopefully do that again and get a result out here. We need to remember that and remember they're a good team as well. We've just got to make sure we're ready on the day."
The Socceroos are back in action for the first time since their 2-2 draw with Thailand in November. The Bournemouth fullback admits that match "was a tough one to take in".
"It was a weird game for us," Smith said.
"It was difficult, the conditions were difficult and to be fair to them they were a good side on the day and we found it tough. We ended up getting the draw and we had to reflect on it when we came into camp.
"Most of the boys and the staff would have been thinking about it as well. We've had a few tough away games now We analysed it and we've put it under the rug, we move on now to the important game we have on Thursday.
"We're unbeaten in the qualifiers so it's a great thing for us to have and great confidence for us going into the game."
Smith has racked up 14 international caps since his debut in 2014. The left back said he feels more at home now in the national team set-up.
"Each camp you come into you get more settled," the left back said.
"You've just got to keep improving and keep trying to get back into the squads that come into camp. There's a few new boys in camp this time so it will be the process for them to get in. But all the boys make them feel really welcome when they first come."
