BRISBANE Roar skipper Matt Smith has hailed his side's never-say-die attitude after a gripping come-from-behind 2-1 grand final victory over Perth Glory on Sunday.
Two Besart Berisha goals inside the final six minutes clinched the A-League championship for Brisbane, who came from 2-0 down late on in last season's decider to defeat Central Coast on penalties.
“Over the last two years now we've never given up,” Smith told Fox Sports. “We've always continued until the final whistle.
“That's one of the things that is very special about this team. It doesn't matter what the circumstances are, or the conditions are, we always try to do our best and always try to win.”
Roar keeper Michael Theoklitos, who became the first player to win four A-League championships, said the game was almost up there in terms of entertainment alongside last season's epic decider.
“It had it all. Last year was hard to compete with that, but this had everything,” Theoklitos said. “At the end of the day as long as we came through on the winnin end I don't mind.”
He added: “Obviously full credit to Perth Glory, they came out with a game plan and made it very difficult for us. But at the end of the day we kept fighting until the 90th minute and we got our just reward.
“The Premier's Plate hurt us to miss out by only two points. So we had to win some sort of silverware to give us some reward for our way of play and how consistent we've been for the past two years. We've been in the top two teams and setting the benchmark for the league.”
Goalscoring hero Berisha was overjoyed by the victory and said: “There's nothing to say. I'm so happy.”
However, Berisha was strong in his opinion on his controversial late penalty which was awarded after their appeared to be no contact from the sliding Liam Miller.
“There was a touch but in the end I think it was the correct from Jarred (referee Gillett), there was a touch,” he said.
“This is football. Sometimes it's like this and I make the golden penalty and we win.”
