Socceroo Brad Smith has been ruled out of the upcoming Confederations Cup after suffering a hamstring injury in Thursday’s 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia in Adelaide.
Smith was replaced at half-time by Aziz Behich with Australia coach Ange Postecoglou stating after the game he had “felt a bit of a twinge in his hamstring”.
However, the severity of the problem has now been revealed after scans, with Smith confirming on social media he’s been ruled out of the Russian tournament.
Australia are permitted to replace Smith in the 23-man squad for the Confederations Cup.
Norway-based left-back Alex Gersbach, who is currently holidaying in the Greek Islands, is the likely option if Postecoglou goes for a like-for-like replacement.
Left-sided Sparta Rotterdam winger Craig Goodwin is another potential option.

Smith’s lack of game-time at club level had created some uncertainty about his position in the Socceroos first-choice XI.
The former Liverpool man has started seven of Australia’s eight third round World Cup qualifiers, showing he is Postecoglou’s first-choice option.
Turkey-based left-back Behich is the obvious replacement in Australia’s XI, with Postecoglou offering him praise for his display against Saudi Arabia.
“We’ve got full confidence in Aziz,” Postecoglou said after Thursday’s win.
“He played last weekend. Him and Ryan (McGowan) arrived really late. Ryan had to step in last minute as Bailey Wright pulled up sore after training.
“They both literally had to be thrown in with one training session under their belt. That’s the resilience of the group, credit to them they don’t make excuses.
“Both of them did a good job.”
