Smith has held talks with Football Association counterpart Brian Barwick and claims the fixture is "back on".

Scotland and England have not played each other since their Euro 2000 play-off in 1999.

They met at Wembley during Euro 96, but prior to that their previous meeting came at Hampden in 1989.

Smith told The Sun: "I've had discussions with Brian Barwick about resurrecting the Scotland v England games and it's definitely back on."

Existing commitments mean there is little scope for the match to be played before the end of next year, although 2010 could be a realistic target.

"It might be 2010 before we get a game," said Smith.

"The idea would be to establish some sort of relationship for one-off games or even have them biannually."
