A look at round three of the A-League, headlined by Western Sydney's triumph in a pulsating Sydney derby.
THEY SAID IT - "It was over the line, from where I am. It's a little bit frustrating when you do see that, especially on the big screen. It's clear," Sydney FC coach Steve Corica seethes when Kosta Barbarouses' effort is deemed not to have crossed the line in the Sydney derby. The moment prompted Robbie Slater to conduct an unintentionally hilarious re-enactment after the match.
MAN OF THE ROUND - Western Sydney captain Mitch Duke wins honours with a stunning diving header that decided the Sydney derby. The first derby at the new Bankwest Stadium was a pulsating occasion, buoyed by the 28,519-strong crowd.
STAT ATTACK - Jamie Maclaren's brace in Melbourne City's 2-1 defeat of Western United was the latest in his incredible scoring spree. The Socceroo has every one of City's four league goals this season. He scored six in four FFA Cup wins en route to the final. He also has four from two World Cup qualifiers for Australia, making his early-season run 14 goals in 10 games.
TALKING POINT - Is Tony Popovic on the verge of igniting the league's most-exciting double act? Bruno Fornaroli scored his first goal in a Perth shirt on Sunday night in Wellington, courtesy of a Diego Castro cut-back. The Uruguayan then assisted Chris Ikonomidis in a 2-1 defeat of the Phoenix, showing signs he could return to his record goalscoring ways.
BEAT THAT - No one, least of all in Newcastle, needs reminding of Riley McGree's goalscoring ability. The Adelaide midfielder - who turns 21 next week - followed up his unforgettable scorpion kick at McDonald Jones Stadium two years ago with a brace on Saturday anyway; a thumping volley followed by an 'Olympico' - a goal scored direct from a corner - to defeat his old side.
UNDER PRESSURE - Ufuk Talay is maintaining a line of positivity but it doesn't look bright for Wellington. His Phoenix have shown a few bright spells in three losses so far, but mainly while chasing games. They must hope the game plan comes together as newly signed marquee Gary Hooper improves his fitness.
INJURIES - Marco Kurz will anxiously await news on star forward Andrew Nabbout's hamstring injury from Melbourne Victory's 1-0 defeat of Brisbane. Nabbout joins fellow Victory stars Robbie Kruse (hamstring) and Tim Hoogland (quad) on the sidelines.
WHAT'S NEXT - After the exciting first airing of the Western United-Melbourne City derby, Melbourne Victory get a crack at the Victorian new boys by hosting Mark Rudan's side on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium. Sydney FC are home to Newcastle on Friday to kick off the round while Western Sydney look to push on from their derby result when they are at home to Brisbane.
