Graham Arnold insists he does not yet know who the next Socceroos captain will be after veteran skipper Mile Jedinak announced his retirement.
Speculation had focused on defender Trent Sainsbury – who is also Arnold's son-in-law – getting the armband after he wore it in Jedinak's absence for the World Cup warm-ups.
But today Arnold dismissed the rumour mill and insisted it was still open for anyone to claim it.
He said he was looking to the more experienced players to step up at next week's camp, especially with the influx of so many young and new faces to the squad.
"We have two camps and three games in front of us and I'll maybe use these to use different players as captains to see which one really steps into the role for the Asian Cup," he said today.
"The most important thing for me after Mile's decision is which players are going to be the leaders now? Which ones are ready to step up and take the leadership role which Mile and Tim Cahill did for so well for so long.
"I've already seen some good signs from in camp in Turkey."
As well as Sainsbury, Arnold also identified Mat Ryan, Mathew Leckie and Robbie Kruse as potential contenders.
He added: "I know the Australian captaincy is a huge honour. It is very important for the game but also as a role model for Australia.
"I'm going to take my time and make sure we get the right one."
