To see John Travolta meet the Socceroos on Friday at Kloofzicht Lodge...

Only 15 of Australia's 23-man squad made it onto the pitch in 2006 as Hiddink steered Australia into the second round of the World Cup for the first time and the bulk of those players now make up Verbeek's first-choice line-up.

Indeed Carney is one of just nine players in the current Socceroos' squad that was not part of the World Cup squad of four years ago with the distinct possibility that Verbeek will field 10 of the same starting XI in Sunday's opening game against Germany in Durban that started in the corresponding game against Japan in 2006.

However Carney, the Socceroos' second-choice left-back behind Scott Chipperfield, says the fringe members of Australia's 2010 World Cup squad are all expecting to see at least some game time throughout the upcoming three group matches against Germany, Serbia and Ghana.

"I am sure it (the Socceroos' team) will chop and change," Carney said.

"And I am sure the whole 23 players will need to be involved and they will (all) probably get some sort of involvement in the games so you have just got to make sure you are ready (if called upon)."

Carney, who has 25 caps for Australia, is one of the most likely players outside Verbeek's preferred starting line-up to play in South Africa given he can also play on the left side of midfield if required.

"Yeah I will be involved I think, I am coming off a shoulder injury but it seems to have come good over the last couple of days so I am happy about that," he said.

"But if I am not selected and I am on the bench I will be fully prepared to come on and help the team."

Carney admits it has been tough breaking into a defence that only conceded four goals in 14 Asian qualifiers en route to the World Cup.

"The defence has done well over the last two or three years and hopefully we can carry that on for the next three (group) games," he said.

"However either me or Chippers can both play further up the park as well so we have just got to wait and see how it goes (in terms of team selection) but I think it's good for me that I can play both left-back and left-midfield."

Carney said the Socceroos were feeling confident ahead of their difficult opening game against the three-time World Cup winner on Sunday.

"It's a good feeling (in the squad) and we have just got to prepare right now over the next couple of days to make sure we get our shape right," he said.

"But I think Pim pretty much knows what he is going to do now and we have been watching videos of Germany and the way they play and we are really looking forward to it now."
