SOCCEROO David Carney is currently on trial at Championship side West Ham and could be set to sign a one year deal after impressing at a trial match overnight on Monday.
Carney has been without a club since his last side Blackpool were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season and he was released as part of their cost-cutting measures.
But he's faced a double struggle to find a new club as he has been sidelined with a shoulder injury following surgery in the off-season.
He was linked with a move to Nottingham Forest and a reunion with Steve McClaren, his former coach at FC Twente in the Eredivisie, but the deal apparently fell through at the last moment.
Over the off-season, Carney said there were some 'big-money' contracts on offer to him but he was been conspicuous by his low profile during the transfer window.
He was also linked with a return to the A-League as a marquee star for Sydney until the deal bringing Brett Emerton home killed off any possibility of that.
Now though Carney has turned up at Upton Park in the hope of catching manager Sam Allardyce's eye.
Carney featured in a trial match between a Hammers development squad and a Spurs XI on Monday night and was heavily involved with the thick of the action.
Playing as a leftback, he made several runs up the wing and flighted in crosses into tthe box during the 2-2 draw, with the Hammers creating multiple chances to win the game but for poor finishing.
Reports from the game say he combined well with fellow trialist Brazilian Juca and West Ham's Freddie Sears, with overlapping runs and good crosses into the danger area.
The club's match report from the game added: "Carney has improved as the game has gone on and also caught the eye at the attacking end of the field.
"He's a strong player and experienced and composed in possession."
