Millwall didn't disclose the length of the deal except stating it was "long-term", in light of Meredith playing all 46 Championship games last term.

The 30-year-old joined Millwall from League One club Bradford City in mid-2017 and earned a Socceroos recall following his good Championship form.

“It’s nice – I’m really happy to agree terms, sign again and further my career at Millwall,” Meredith said.

“We’ve got a really exciting future here.”

Meredith, who was part of Australia's 2018 World Cup squad, added: “I’m finding my way back into pre-season, obviously getting a bit of an extended break, but I’m really looking forward to the start of the season against Middlesbrough.

“I’m sure the atmosphere will be electric for another big year at The Den. It will be a huge game and everyone will be raring to go."

Millwall manager Neil Harris said he was delighted to re-sign a player who was one of the best in his position in the league.

“Naturally I’m very pleased that James has extended his contract,” Harris said.

“He had an exceptional season last year. Statistics show that he was one of the best in the division in his position and popular opinion backs it up.

“James is settled in London and in our dressing room.

"He has made monumental progression as a player, culminating in his call-up to Australia’s World Cup squad, which was all down to his fine form on the pitch and professionalism off it.”
