EXCLUSIVE: Aussie midfielder Nick Carle said the Socceroos were over the moon with Saturday night's draw 0-0 against Holland and questioned the negative headlines put out by some media outlets.
One headline that greeted the Socceroos at their Sunday morning recovery session was "Rusty Roos" Another was "Socceroos Struggle To Fluster Dutch".
Carle said some in the local media did not understand the significance of gaining a draw against a country ranked so high in the world.
"I can't believe anyone asked? Everyone's entitled to their opinion but I can't see how they could say that? We've drawn against number three in the world," said Carle this morning.
"We could've won the game in the end, so it's a credit to the boys. That's my personal opinion and everyone has a right to their own opinion."
Carle added that football at this level is all about results, agreeing that a 0-0 draw against Holland at the World Cup would be a great result.
"It was a brilliant result. Although they had better possession for most of the time, we had the better chances.
"Bretty Holman got in behind very well for the chance at the end. And Dario's free-kick could've been dangerous. We had the more clear cut chances.
"If we had a draw against them in a World Cup, it would be amazing. Number three in the world, it was a brilliant result. I think we would've taken it before the game."
At a stadium where Carle made his senior debut as a 15-year-old match-winner for Sydney Olympic in 1997, the Palace man was kept on the bench by Pim Verbeek.
While disappointed he didn't get some game time, Carle enjoyed seeing the Dutch up close.
"They're the number three in the world, they're not up there for no reason. Brilliant footballers...they were all very good, weren't they? All were unbelievable on the ball although I would've preferred to play against them."
Carle added there was a measure of relief that the game was out of the way so the Socceroos can concentrate on their 2011 Asian Cup qualifier against Oman on Wednesday night at Etihad stadium.
"It counts for three points and everyone knows the job needs to be done."
At recovery this morning, Carl Valeri received treatment on a knock he had going into Saturday night's game while Vince Grella remained at the team hotel.
The Blackburn Rovers defensive midfielder is an almost certainty to miss Wednesday night's clash after picking up a thigh injury against Holland.
