Boyle injured his knee in Australia's 5-0 friendly win over Oman.

The Hibernian winger was ruled out of the 2019 Asian Cup at first, but will now miss the next five months of football.

"The knee injury sustained by Martin Boyle on international duty is, unfortunately, likely to keep him out for the rest of the season," Hibs confirmed in a tweet.

"Martin underwent surgery this morning and we look forward to seeing him back in action for pre-season."

Boyle said on Instagram that he was "gutted" to learn his season is over.

"But the operation was a success and was the best solution for me to extend my playing career over time," he said.

"Will do everything I can to come back fitter and stronger and continue to help the team on the field."

The 25-year-old debuted for the Socceroos in November against South Korea.
