EXCLUSIVE: Matt Simon has admitted he's aiming for the A-League's golden boot - and he'll be happy to stick with Coast Coast Mariners next season.
The youngster says he has consistently played down the importance of finishing as the A-League's top marksman this season but with the finishing line in sight, he's had a change of stance.
Wellington Phoenix forward Shane Smeltz leads the way with 12 goals while Simon has 11.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com today: "I've kept saying all year that I'm not interested in the golden boot but now we're at the stage we are, yeah, I wouldn't mind snagging a couple to win it.
"Hopefully Melbourne can do us a favour (and prevent Shane Smeltz scoring) when they play Wellington on Friday.
"In the end though I'd rather miss out on the gold boot and win the grand final than finish top scorer and not achieve what we want (as a team)."
Simon's exploits this season have seen his profile raised and that could generate other interest for his services.
Mariners boss Lawrie McKinna told au.fourfourtwo.com recently that he felt Simon would be best served by remaining with the Mariners for another season.
McKinna said: "My advice to Matt is the same as I gave Mile [Jedinak] a year ago.
"You need to cement yourself with a good second season. You've got back it up."
Simon still has a year to run on his contract at the club and his success this year won't see him rushing for the exit.
He said: "I've had a chat with Lawrie about things.
"I'm just concentrating on doing well for the club right now. If something comes up and it's the right move and the right time then you look at it.
"You just look at the situation as it happens."
Simon admits he is 'enjoying the journey' that's about to take in Indonesia with the Socceroos.
He said: "When I heard Pim Verbeek say the squad would be all A-League players then you're obviously hoping but you don't take it for granted at all.
"I was delighted and surprised to get the call and I'm really looking forward to it. I can't wait."
