If Carl Valeri's team finishes second or lower, it will join four teams for the play-off rounds for the second Serie B place. Involvement in the play-offs may mean Valeri could miss selection for the Uruguay game in Sydney on June 2.

Winning would ensure Valeri would be available for selection for the Socceroos game against Uruguay. And give him a few weeks break.

With Vince Grella likely to be involved in relegation play-offs in Serie A for Parma, Valeri could be the obvious man to take his place for the Uruguay game after his strong performance in the recent friendly against China.

Valeri’s contract is currently equally owned by Italian Giants Inter Milan and Grosetto. With one year left on his contract, the Italian “envelope” system may come into play.

Both clubs who have a share in his contract place a bid for his services. The one with the higher bid retains the player.

The “envelope” system is designed to reduce a bidding war between clubs and better reflect a player’s value or so the theory goes.

After Valeri’s strong performance against China he is the highest valued player at Grosetto.

Valeri has represented Australia at every level of football; in Trinidad and Tobago with the U-17, UAE with the U-20s and in the Athens Olympics with the Olyroos. His recent cap in China completes the set.
