EXCLUSIVE: Nicky Carle says he never felt he would make the final cut for the Socceroos’ 2010 World Cup squad – but the new Sydney FC marquee bears coach Pim Verbeek no ill-will.
In a rollercoaster two days, Carle was axed from Verbeek's 28-man squad that left for South Africa on Wednesday after Monday's 2-1 victory over New Zealand - a game Carle warmed the bench.
Later on Wednesday night, Carle, 28, signed with Sydney FC on a three year marquee deal worth over $500,000 a season.
"It is a roller-coaster. But I won't kid you, it hasn't been a disappointment. Devastated. Devastated," he told au.fourfourtwo.com of his national team heartache.
"But regardless of what anyone thinks of his [Verbeek's] style, he is a gentleman. He's always been a very nice guy to me regardless of footballing styles or if he likes me as a footballer or he doesn't.
"He's a gentleman, Verbeek, and he's always been upfront and that's something I've always appreciated. He's always been honest.
"So there's not a bad word I can say. But obviously so disappointed. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity."
Quizzed on the vibe Carle got from being in the national team camp over the last year and he said the axing confirmed his feeling that he was a square peg in a round hole.
"Being honest with you, I didn't feel that confident," he said. "It wasn't my greatest season/
"I still think at the back end of the season I played really well, playing defensive midfield and attacking midfield against Villa and Wolves, getting in some good games before Warnock left.
"But I don't think I felt the same confidence from the coaching staff [in the national team]. Although he [Verbeek] was absolutely brilliant, I always thought I had to prove myself to keep myself in.
"But that's football... you're not always going to be the coach's favourite."
