Le Guen`s Cameroon became the first side to exit the competition after their 2-1 defeat to Denmark on Saturday left them with no chance to make the last 16, and they complete their campaign against Holland on Thursday.
Frenchman Le Guen has come under fire for his side`s recent performances and he faced a number of questions about his future following the Denmark game.
The former Lyon and Rangers coach insisted he would not be resigning but, according to reports in Australia, he could now be in line to take over the Socceroos from Dutchman Pim Verbeek, who is leaving his post after the tournament.
Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy confirmed they would be looking to appoint a new coach soon and, although he would not comment on speculation linking Le Guen with the job, he did say it is likely to be a coach from a country at the World Cup.
"We have many irons in the fire but we will take our time to choose. It's very important we find the right person at the right price," Lowy said.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, when pressed on whether Le Guen was the leading candidate, Lowy said: "Let me say this. Is the coach coming from the 31 countries that are here (at the World Cup)? Yes."
Le Guen is currently preparing his side for their final World Cup clash against the Dutch in Cape Town on Thursday.
The Indomitable Lions have lost both their matches in Group E so far and are now without a win in nine games stretching back to the World Cup.
Looking ahead to their final match, Le Guen hopes they can depart South Africa with a good display.
"I hope that we operate in the same way, that we defend the national colours of the team. Perhaps we'll have a different team but I hope that we will play for the honour of the country," Le Guen said.
