Middlesbrough striker Scott McDonald was one of the three initially cut from the squad in late May.

But Verbeek believes he has more than the three - Nikita Rukavytsya, Josh Kennedy and Harry Kewell - named options up front.

It may be "shadow strikers" that occupy the other goal scoring roles.

"Timmy Cahill is not a midfield player," Verbeek told The Age. "He is a shadow striker.

"Our goals will come from the forwards, the attacking thinking players, and from set pieces. I think we have enough players who can score goals."

Australia's nemesis in 2006, Italy, according to Verbeek, was deadly from set pieces.

Verbeek said: "Italy scored nine from 11 as far as I can remember and they were world champions."

The playing group shares the same confidence as their boss.

Brett Holman, Josh Kennedy and midfielder Carl Valeri all think the squad has a variety of players capable of finding the net.

"The boys who have been picked so far have got confidence in themselves," Holman said. "The rest of the team have got confidence in them.

"With Timmy and Josh, they are two players who have proved already their scoring capabilities. And you have got younger players who can come in and score goals."

Kennedy shared similar views.

"I don't think we need to have 10 strikers in the squad," he said. "We have always had these bunch of guys in the squad and we have always managed to score goals in qualifying and other games.

"I don't see any reason why that should change."

Canberra-born Valeri, yet to score at international level, says the Socceroos have the depth needed.

He added: "I think we have got the quality. Tim and Josh are goalscorers, and Bresh [Mark Bresciano] can hit the target.

"Emo [Brett Emerton] on the right is a great player, he has scored many goals for Australia, so I think we have got firepower."

The Socceroos scored 19 goals through qualifying with Cahill (four goals), Emerton (four), Kennedy (three), Kewell (three) and Bresciano (two) the top contributors.
