The Socceroos' surge comes following 2-0 and 1-0 wins over Iraq and UAE respectively in the opening two games of the final round of 2018 World Cup qualifying through Asia.

Australia is the biggest riser inside the top 50, slotting below Ghana and Scotland (43rd and 44th) and above Denmark and South Korea (46th and 47th).

Leapfrogging South Korea and Japan, means Australia is the second best ranked side in the Asian Football Confederation, behind 37th placed Iran.

It is Australia's best ranking since 2013 when the side sat 36th in the world.

It's also the first time the Socceroos has been inside the top 50 since that calendar year.

The next Fifa rankings are due to be released on 20 October, with Australia to face Saudi Arabia and Japan prior to then.
