It will be the first time Brazil has met the Socceroos in Melbourne since the two nations played out a 2-all draw in 1999.

Australian football fans will get two opportunities to see world class players in Neymar Jnr, Philippe Coutinho and Marcelo do battle in the sporting capital of the world, when they take on the Socceroos’ stars including Mile Jedinak, Tim Cahill, Aaron Mooy and Massimo Luongo.

Brazil has won six of the nine match ups against the Socceroos, with Australia’s sole success against the South American powerhouse coming during the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup, where they won 1-0.

The Socceroos will view the match as a perfect warm-up for their 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup campaign in Russia, beginning on June 19.

Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, John Eren MP, said the match was a massive coup for football fans.

“It’s the clash every Australian football fan wanted, and we’ve got it,” Minister Eren said.

“This game will pit our boys against the world’s best, and give our fans the chance to cheer on their beloved Socceroos as they prepare for their quest for Confederation Cup glory.”
