AUSTRALIA will play New Zealand as their final farewell match at Melbourne Cricket Ground before both sides head off to South Africa for the World Cup.
Football Federation Australia had hoped to keep the farewell game opponents secret to launch it in a blaze of glory after the Indonesia game next month.
But Victoria Premier John Brumby lifted the lid on plans today, revealing the Kiwi match-up at the MCG.
"Melbourne is the sporting capital of the world so there is no better place for Socceroos fans to see the last match on home soil before they embark for a tilt at World Cup glory in South Africa," he said.
"No other Australian city draws bigger crowds for Socceroos matches than Melbourne and we expect a huge number of local fans as well as those flying in from interstate and across the Tasman.
"The Kiwis are in for a big shock when they run out onto the MCG to a sea of green and gold."
Australia played Greece at the MCG in front of 90,000 fans before jetting off to Germany for the 2006 World Cup.
