SPAIN stretched their unbeaten run to 15 competitive matches on Saturday night after claiming a last-gasp 2-1 win over battling Peru in Huelva.
In their penultimate friendly before beginning their Euro 2008 campaign, Spain were on top for large periods but needed an injury-time strike from Joan Capdevila to take the spoils.
Spain started confidently and only a goalline clearance prevented Andres Iniesta from putting the home side ahead in the fourth minute after David Villa had got in behind the Peru defence.
The impressive David Silva was then presented with a shooting chance following a slick one-two with Valencia club-mate Villa, but the midfielder's effort was deflected for a corner.
Spain continued to dominate and Xavi struck the woodwork in the 13th minute.
The Barcelona midfielder tried his luck from outside the box and his shot was fumbled by Peru goalkeeper Leao Butron, who will have been hugely relieved to see the ball rebound off the inside of his right-hand post and stay out.
Spain were unable to build on that promising start though, and despite some nice one-touch football and plenty of possession they soon found it much harder to break down the visiting defence.
However, after a lengthy period of fruitless play Luis Aragones' side finally created another opening in the 38th minute, and Villa took advantage to fire home.
Spain had looked to have earned a free-kick in a dangerous position when Iniesta was scythed down from behind, but referee Dimitar Meckarovski allowed play to continue and Villa coolly slotted past Butron after being put through by Xavi.
Aragones opted against making wholesale changes at half-time, introducing just three new faces, and Spain continued in the second half where they left on in the first - in total control.
Silva had a chance to double the hosts' lead in the 50th minute following some hesitancy by Peru right-back Guillermo Salas, but Butron was able to block the Valencia man's effort.
Peru themselves had found attacking opportunities few and far between in the opening hour, but they almost equalised following a brilliant move that stretched three-quarters of the length of the pitch.
Unfortunately for Jose del Solar's team, they found Casillas in top form as the Real Madrid goalkeeper first palmed away Paolo Guerrero's low drive, before producing an even better save seconds later to keep out Daniel Chavez's deflected cross.
Soon after that, Aragones opted to give two of his five uncapped players their international debuts with Ruben de la Red and former Recreativo Huelva favourite Santi Cazorla getting a chance to impress.
Cazorla's first major contribution was to almost create Spain's second goal with a pinpoint cross for Dani Guiza, but La Liga's leading scorer this season saw his downward header saved by Butron.
Spain were made to rue their inability to score a second goal though as Peru drew level with 16 minutes remaining through substitute Hernan Rengifo following a mix-up between Casillas and Carlos Marchena.
Casillas looked to be coming out to claim the ball, but Marchena opted to deal with the danger himself and his attempted clearance went straight to Rengifo, who sent a looping header back over the stranded Casillas and into the net.
Spain upped the tempo after that, and Cazorla and Guiza both brought fine saves out of Butron before Sergio Garcia became the third debutant for Spain with 10 minutes remaining.
Despite those changes the Iberian nation looked likely to have to accept a draw as the match drifted into addition time still locked at 1-1.
However, with time running out left-back Capdevila latched onto Cesc Fabregas' cross to send a thunderous right-footed volley into the roof of the net for the winning goal.
