The Eternal City outfit went into Tuesday's game desperate for a victory to spark their campaign into life following five successive defeats.

A goal from Christian Panucci and a brace from Mirko Vucinic allowed the Italian team to claim a 3-1 win over Chelsea, and the Roma tactician believes the triumph might prove to be a pivotal point for his side.

"With this win the lads will have a further motivation to give continuity to our results," said Spalletti. "Against Chelsea they showed the quality that we have displayed in the past.

"Now we are more confident of ourselves although considering our situation in the Serie A standings it's always important not to be too calm."

Roma have won just two games and lost six in nine Serie A encounters this term.

Their poor form in the domestic competition has left last season's Scudetto runners-up hovering above the relegation zone.

Spalletti was relieved his team finally showed their true colours on Tuesday and expects his players now not to look back.

"I think we deserved to win against Chelsea," he said.

"It was extremely important for us to win.

"We had scored just one goal in our previous five games while conceding 11.

"I hope this is the turning point, and that we can play well for the rest of the season."

Tuesday's win also revived the Giallorossi's European hopes.

The victory leaves Roma level on six points with Bordeaux, and just one behind leaders Chelsea with two pool games remaining.

Spalletti, whose team take on strugglers Bologna on Saturday, believes unity was key to his team's triumph against Chelsea.

"The key was to remain united," he said. "Our fans were behind us giving us the necessary support.

"The team showed the battling spirit that we had lost along the way and now we must keep this up."

Anything but a win this weekend will put Spalletti's future in jeopardy, however.

Roma are just one point clear of the drop zone and face a challenging schedule as they face city rivals Lazio after their meeting with Bologna.
