Gary Speed is desperate for Leeds to avoid relegation so they can start to rebuild next season for another push at the Premiership.
The 1992 title winners could be banished to the third tier for the first time in their history depending on results this weekend.
Speed - who was part of that successful side 15 years ago - is deeply saddened by Leeds plight.
But the Bolton midfielder, who left Elland Road for Everton in 1996, said: "It has been a meteoric fall but hopefully they can keep their heads above water this season.
"If they do, Leeds need to try to progress next year and get back in the Premiership. It's where the club belongs."
Speed retains an abiding affection for the club, where he started his career.
He added: "I spent 10 years at Leeds after leaving school at 15 and going to live there.
"I am very much a Leeds lad at heart as I did a lot of growing up during my time at the club.
"It is sad to see where they are but hopefully Leeds will get out of it."
