Socceroo Matt Spiranovic is back in Melbourne and considering his club future following the relegation of his Chinese club Hangzhou.
Spiranovic played a full game on Sunday as Hangzhou could only draw 2-2 with Yanbian Funde, confirming their relegation to the Chinese League One.
The 28-year-old defender has another year to run on his lucrative Hangzhou contract but is understood to be mulling over his future.
Spiranovic would almost certainly surrender his position as a first-choice Socceroos centre-back under Ange Postecoglou if he was playing his club football in China’s second tier.
Spiranovic preferred not to comment when contacted by FourFourTwo, however his China-based Socceroos defensive partner Trent Sainsbury shed some light on the situation.
“I sent him a message on Monday saying ‘what’s your plans now and where are you off to?’,” Sainsbury told FourFourTwo.
“We spoke a little bit. He had a club meeting that day.
“He’s got some decisions to make and so does the club as well, about which players to keep and who to sell or let go.
“It’ll be an interesting time for him.”
Spiranovic is Geelong-born, was raised in Victoria and trained with Melbourne Victory in their fledgling days back in 2005.
After stints in Germany, Japan and Qatar, Spiranovic returned to Australia in 2013 where he enjoyed his most fruitful period of his career with Western Sydney Wanderers.
Spiranovic won the 2012-13 A-League premiership and 2014 AFC Champions League with Wanderers, before lifting the 2015 Asian Cup with the Socceroos.
The 33-time Socceroo made 24 league appearances for Hangzhou this year but couldn’t help them avoid the drop.
Hangzhou, who are owned by real estate billionaire Song Weiping, had been in the Chinese top flight since 2007.
