Australia coach Ange Postecoglou revealed the news at Wednesday’s press conference to announce his latest 30-man Socceroos squad with Spiranovic excluded.

The 28-year-old centre-back had been set to line up in China’s League One which begins this weekend following his club Hangzhou Greentown’s relegation last year.

However, Postecoglou revealed the former Western Sydney Wanderers man is set for a lengthy stint out with a “complicated” quad injury.

With Trent Sainsbury struggling for game-time at Italian giants Internazionale, it is a significant setback in a crucial year for the Socceroos with vital World Cup qualifiers and the Confederations Cup in the next six months.

“He’s injured. He picked up an injury in pre-season,” Postecoglou said.

“He’ll be out for a significant amount of time.

“It’s still not clear the extent but the early signs are that he’ll be missing for a little while.

“He wasn’t even in consideration.”

Sainsbury, Bailey Wright, Rhys Williams, Milos Degenek and Mark Milligan are among Postecoglou’s centre-back options in the 30-man squad.
