A Kenny Miller hat-trick saw Rangers increase their lead atop the Scottish Premier League standings with a 3-2 win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
Celtic were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Dundee United, meaning Rangers have a three-point buffer over their crosstown rivals.
But Rangers' day did not start brightly, and they found themselves a goal down after Connor Sammon netted after 21 minutes.
Miller equalised for Rangers from the penalty spot three minutes from half-time and slotted another penalty 10 minutes after the break to put the visitors in front, but Sammon equalised for Kilmarnock just four minutes later.
Miller scored the winner after 64 minutes - his 18th goal of what has so far been a stunning campaign.
At Parkhead, Celtic took the lead after 21 minutes through striker Gary Hooper but could not find a second, allowing Dundee United defender Sean Dillon to bob up and score an injury-time equaliser for the visitors.
St Johnstone heaped more misery on under-fire Aberdeen boss Mark McGhee with a 1-0 win at Pittodrie confining them to second-bottom place on the league table, just one point clear of Hamilton.
An own goal from Aberdeen defender Alexander Diamond seven minutes from full-time was enough to hand St Johnstone the three points.
Goals either side of the break to Rudi Skacel and David Templeton gave Hearts a 2-0 win over bottom side Hamilton, whose Simon Mensing missed a penalty with 10 minutes to go.
Fifth-placed Motherwell were held to a 1-1 draw away from home by St Mirren.
Gareth Wardlaw opened the scoring for the Saints after 37 minutes but Nick Blackman levelled the match with a 15 minutes remaining.
And despite making his long-awaited comeback from an ankle injury in the English Premier League, Wayne was not the only Rooney in the headlines on Saturday, with Inverness Caledonian Thistle's Adam Rooney netting a hat-trick in his side's 4-2 win over Hibernian.
