Playing on the defensive point of a midfield diamond, Luongo produced a number of well timed challenges and delivered some impressive short and long range passes.

After the match, Jewell said: “I was particularly pleased with young Massimo, who I thought was outstanding.

“He trained with us for the first time yesterday but has settled in and although I know it’s only a preseason friendly I thought he showed great confidence for a 19-year old.

“He looks a great footballer. There is that touch of quality about him.”

The Ipswich players were also impressed with what they saw from Luongo. Michael Chopra, the scorer of both goals, said via Twitter: “The boy Massimo Luongo looks a player. Great signing.”
