Australia took Brazil all the way to the dreaded shootout.

Goalkeeper Lydia Williams heroically saved Brazilian legend Marta’s effort only to see Katrina Gorry’s chance to win the game denied by Barbara shortly after.

The Brazilian shot stopper then thwarted Alanna Kennedy's attempt from the spot to send the home side into the semi-final.

But Stajcic had nothing but praise for the centre-back and her team-mates after an epic contest.

“There’s not much you can say to a player, we’re proud of all the players, not just Kennedy,” Stajcic said.

“She missed a penalty, better players than her have missed penalties and I’ve seen (Diego) Maradona and (Lionel) Messi miss them.

“That happens in a shootout, someone’s going to miss. Marta missed as well and that’s just what happens.”

The Matildas record just one win at the Olympics and despite that they can hold their heads up high according to Stajcic.

Australia gradually improved throughout the campaign after losing the first game 2-0 to Canada and Stajcic was happy with the involvement the whole team had at the Olympics.

“We’re all proud of our players and how they represented our country,” he said.

“It was an amazing effort from our players, they were courageous, resilient and worked all the way through the games, so we’re just proud of every player.”
