The Australians sitting third on the table in Group F, now face an arduous task of progressing to the knockout phase.

The Matildas were in front 2-1 with three minutes remaining before captain Saskia Bartusiak equalised for the Germans.

The Australians now travel to Fonte Nova Arena, Salvador to take on Zimbabwe in their final group game. Stajcic spoke of his frustrations after the draw and believed they could have easily taken the three points.

“I thought we created enough chances today to win the game,” Stajcic said.

“It’s still very frustrating to concede two goals in the times we did, which was just after scoring and 10 seconds before half-time.

“At the end of the day you’re playing against a really good opponent and if you drop your guard for one second they can punish you and that’s what happens at a high level of international sport.

"Now we’re on one point and have to focus on our next performance and get a win against Zimbabwe and hopefully sneak through.”

Despite the opportunity missed, the Matildas boss took some positives out of the performance and believed if they could produce what was shown against Germany they could realise their dream of winning gold.

Stajcic also praised his team for coming out stronger in the second half, despite conceding on the brink of half-time.

“If we get to the quarter-finals, we’re a good chance against anyone just like we showed tonight," he said. "All the teams in the top 10 of women’s football can now beat each other.

“Usually a goal before half-time can kill a team coming out for the second half, we came out in the second half (and), I thought we created more chances than them and from our perspective it’s really good.

“It’s a good sign, it shows how resilient and mentally tough our players are not to drop their heads from such a pivotal moment.”
