TEN more players go into the off-season without a club this evening after Sydney FC and Perth Glory swung the axe on their squad lists.
Sydney FC released six players while Glory reduced their roster by four as both clubs aim to bounce back from disappointing seasons with a new and improved line-up for 2013/14.
Kruno Lovrek, Paul Reid, Nathan Sherlock, Trent McClenahan, Adam Griffiths and Jarrod Kyle have not been offered new contracts by Sydney FC and Nick Ward, Dean Heffernan, Evan Berger and Lewis Italiano were culled by Perth.
“It’s an unfortunate part of football but we have decided not to offer new contracts to six players from the 2012/13 squad,” said Sydney FC coach Frank Farina.
“We have started the process of re-shaping the squad for the 2013/14 season and we need to make some tough decisions to allow ourselves the opportunity to do that. We are excited about some of the options before us and we are confident we can put together a squad the fans can be proud of.
“On behalf of Sydney FC, I’d like to thank the players for their efforts and wish them the best of luck in the future.”
Contracted Sydney FC players for the 2013/14 season are: Ivan Necevski, Sebastian Ryall, Fabio Alves, Pascal Bosschaart, Brett Emerton, Alessandro Del Piero, Blake Powell, Mitch Mallia, Terry McFlynn, Joel Chianese, Terry Antonis, Vedran Janjetovic, Ali Abbas, Rhyan Grant, Daniel Petkovski, Hagi Gligor, Peter Triantis and Joel Griffiths.
Perth Glory coach Alistair Edwards said it was an extremely tough decision to release his four players as the club continues to regenerate its squad for the future.
“I’d really like to thank all four for their services to Perth Glory,” Edwards said. “It was a tough decision because all four players are quality people and good professionals.
“Unfortunately though, we need to make the necessary changes as we continue to implement our long term plan.
“I wish Nick, Dean, Evan and Lewis all the best for their future endeavours and again thank them for their contribution.”
Perth Glory are currently in discussions with Liam Miller, Steven McGarry, Ryo Nagai and Matias Cordoba who also come out of contract at the end of this month.
A club statement added: "A decision on their future will be made in due course."
