The match, officiated by retired Italian referee Pierluigi Collina, raised funds for charitable projects in Brazil and Africa and featured more than 40 top names from Brazil and Europe.

Zidane's team started brightly in front of more than 50,000 fans, hitting the post twice before Brazil 1994 World Cup winner Bebeto struck at the other end to hand Ronaldo's side the lead.

But Zidane's men fought back and equalised after the break through futsal star Falcao.

Zidane then put his side ahead with a spectacular volley, though parity was restored when Caca Ferrari found the net for Ronaldo's team.

The match appeared headed for a stalemate until Ronaldo's men had the final say through Leandro Damiao, who netted the winner with a powerful strike.

"It was nice. Even injured, I had to be there participating," Ronaldo said.

"It was great because Gremio's stadium is spectacular.

"The crowd came here and I think we got the message across. Everyone talked about it.

"We are trying to fight against poverty and I am very pleased about the score."

Current Santos forward Neymar said it was a privilege to play alongside former greats such as Zico, Cafu and Roberto Carlos.

"It was a great honour to be in this game, to be playing alongside big Brazilian idols, my idols as well," he said.

"It was a pleasure to help some people. That is the most important thing."
