MILE Sterjovski has called time on his international career with the Socceroos after the Perth Glory man today failed to make Pim Verbeek's squad.
Sterjovski, capped 43 times for Australia said the main reason for his decision was to spend more time with his wife and two young sons.
For Sterjovski, though, the 30-year-old has no regrets about leaving England at the end of last season to play with the Glory, despite knowing the A-League's early finish to the season may jeopardise his spot in the World Cup squad.
"We decided to finish off the season in Perth instead of leaving in January," Sterjovski said, referring to team-mates Burns and Coyne.
"I knew it was a bit of a risk but it was something that I wanted to do, I wanted to finish the season here and see how far we could go and then from March onwards, to get as fit as you can.
"Without playing games it's a difficult situation and we got as fit as possible, but nothing beats match fitness and I think that's what he (Verbeek) was looking for.
"I'm disappointed but I knew it was going to be a long shot to make the squad but I'm still proud of the efforts that myself, Jake and Chris have done.
"Unfortunately it's just not meant to be."
Sterjovski said he'd only been back in Perth a few hours on Saturday night when he received the call from Verbeek telling him he was not included in the squad, despite having played a major role in Australia's qualification campaign for the tournament.
Sterjovski said he still felt as though there was a position in the side for himself, but felt this was a good opportunity to call time on his international career.
"I do believe if I did stay in Europe and I was in the same situation where I wasn't playing as regularly, I think I probably would have made the squad, but in saying that I have no regrets," Sterjovski said.
"(So) I think I'm going to take this opportunity to say that I'm probably retiring from international football.
"I think I've had a good 10 years with the Socceroos and I'm really proud of my achievements.
"But I think it's time to concentrate on my family and give them a lot of time and also Perth Glory.
"I'm very fortunate and proud to have been involved in the last World Cup and it was such a good experience, so it does soften the blow that I've been there.
"But for this World Cup, I just wish all the players the best and I'll be supporting them 100 percent."
